My work is mainly about creating original form through the construction of hand-coiled, earthstone clay, mostly realised as vessels. Inspiration comes from through looking at and observing the human form, both male and female, its statuesque qualities and its movement. Initially I looked at the female figure wanting to portray and celebrate its voluptuousness and curvaceousness, but more recently my work has taken on an androgynous quality where form is more important than gender, in particular paying attention to the contrasting, abstract qualities, for example, the hip bone jutting from the softness of the belly, or the shoulder blade contrasting with the smoothness of the back. As well as the human figure I look to my surrounding environment for inspiration, loosely tying in the idea of the body as a landscape and regard my work to be both statuesque and monumental if not yet in size then in structure. I have future plans to go much bigger. All my work is twice fired with subtle stoneware glazes and my work is best placed in large open spaces, either inside or outside.
