I believe that designers should begin to take more of a responsibility for the environmental implications of their work, and as a result I have been working on projects incorporating the use of all-natural, recyclable or re-used materials. My most recent collection utilises corrugated cardboard in a way that exploits its corrugation both structurally and aesthetically. Not only is a significant proportion of the material used in these pieces recycled, but all of the waste from the pieces production goes back to be recycled in turn. The ‘Flute’ collection incorporates a new and original technique which can be used in a great many variations of context. The ‘fluting’ process allows for patterns to be three-dimensionally built into the structure of the pieces by way of alternating the direction of the corrugation to create different shades on the surface. As a whole my investigations into cardboard as a material have lead onto a variety of solutions that are not only practical, but sustainable in their composition and stylish in their outcome.
